The Other Earthlings
blog posted by deathingrasp Wed, 2010-01-27 14:54 Tags:Us humans tend to see any living thing outside our own “group” as less worthy in many ways, whether it is between human beings (skin color, ethnicity, religion) or between species. I think it is important to acknowledge that human beings do not define this planet, and that all species on this planet represent who “earthlings” are. The human species is just a drop of sand in a desert of life and variety. It is our enormous and cogent brain that allows us to invent destinies and significance, and to glorify and even deify our species. In reality, we as a species are destroying our planet at a rate that far surpasses anything the planet has ever seen. We are more like an unfortunate blight, like a roach infestation in a decently upscale hotel. We use our unbelievably capable minds to further our own “group”, whichever group you choose to defend or identify with. We create factory farms that abuse and slaughter sentient creatures by the masses (pigs, for instance, have demonstrated the emotional and cognitive abilities of human toddlers repeatedly in research studies).
