FRS/GMRS Radios
FRS/GMRS radios are used in cheap commercial walkie-talkies. Popular in airsoft and severly limited in range.
"GMRS was set aside in the late 1940s, to allow for a civilian,
non-hobbyist, non-commercial communications service. Previously, there
had been no services where such operation was permitted.
GMRS requires an $80 license to operate for 5 Years. Many operate
without licenses. More than 99% of radios purchased at electronics
stores are not to licensed users, as the FCC's website indicates.
Multiple millions of GMRS/FRS radios have been sold, but less than
25,000 GMRS licensees exist. It is clear to see that the FCC does not
enforce GMRS, and that operating without a license, while technically
illegal, is not dangerous, as some GMRS elitsts would have you believe.
It is important to note that the 27MHz CB service started life as a
licensed service, as well. It was only after rampant unlicensed use of
it in the 1970s that it was declicensed. GMRS is taking a similar
path." —WikiWog
