The difference between a white hat hacker and a black hat cracker is ethics. Whereas the white hat hacker masters the art of ethically securing systems against attack, the black hat cracker abandons ethical and legal boundaries to crack security for their own selfish and criminal ends. Those who fancy themselves ethical but dabble in the dark arts like to be called gray or brown hats, but it's all the same to the FBI.
