The DHARMA Initiative (Department of Heuristics And Research on Material Applications Initiative)is a multidisciplinary research collective dedicated to improving the human condition through innovative scientific research.

Created in 1970 by Gerald and Karen DeGroot, and officially canceled in 1987 due to unknown causes, although recent activity indicates that DHARMA Initiative research is again being conducted. It is not known whether this is a new development, or if DHARMA research has unofficially continued in secret all along.

The DHARMA Initiative was funded by Alvar Hanso and the Hanso Foundation, a Danish scientific reasearch company.
