Distributing cheap optical discs full of data is a great way to distribute video, audio, information and software.

Copy Sharing

One way to spread a message is is to make copies of print, video and electronic media. Give them to everyone you know to get out the message in a persuasive format. Some messengers encourage their audience to share copies as a way of spreading the word without conventional advertising. Others discourage it because of copyright and business concerns.

“Buy them for yourself and make copies for ten others. Get it out there.”

Discing Examples

SpreadFireFox Discing

“I began to spread Firefox at my school, making CDs that ran PortableFirefox. I called them ‘liberation disks’ because the IE machines were under the reign of some nasty spyware. Firefox was immune, so more and more people were getting work done (and getting A’s, of course).

“However, the IT department at my school was run by an anti-Firefox anti-Mac anti-Linux anti-freedom, ‘you are a piece of crud on the sole of my shoe’ no-open-source, kinda person. I gave him a CD and he made life harder. He unplugged the CD-ROM drives.

“So I got a bunch of 100 MB USB drives and started handing them out - these were a big hit. But IT was not happy about this, and I was in trouble. I told him that since I had started installing Firefox, more work was getting done, and grades had gone up. I demonstrated how badly the spyware was affecting the computers. He began to lighten up, and today he uses Firefox and Thunderbird instead of IE and Outlook.”

The Empowerment Disc

The Empowerment Disc is a good example of discing. Idea Discs are a cheap (50¢) and powerful way of passing out the whole book and accompanying interesting videos and eventually the VR. Someone could conceivably go home, put the disc in, be mind blown, and awaken as an activist.
