Disc Spindle
Blank DVDs and CDs are essential to keep on hand for burning in the field on short notice when you haven't got time to pick more up at a store.
Keep Your Disc Spindle Stocked
Buy a 10 or 12 DVD minispindle of discs to serve as your carrying minispindle. Keep it fully stocked with blank CDRs and DVDRs. Any time you burn or give out discs, replace fresh ones into your minispindle from your large stored spindles of blank discs. You should carry at least one CDR in addition to dual-layer DVDRs because you might need to burn an audio, video or data CD for someone without a DVD player.
Why Spindles?
Spindles are the most durable method of carrying discs around. Plastic CD jewel cases tend to just get broken when carried around in bags and paper sleeves do the job and take up less space in your bag
What kind of discs should you carry besides blanks?
You can carry around copies of discs you might want to give out to friends and acquaintances:
- Carry copies of excellent DVD movies especially documentary films
- Carry infodiscs like knowledge distros with information relavent to particular ideas, skills, tools, groups, etc.,
- Carry software installers for important programs you might need in the field
- Carry operating system installation discs and other utilities you might need to fix computers
- Carry 10 paper sleeves in a ziploc for giving out discs. Label the disc itself, not the case.
- Carry backup discs with emergency files in case your computer dies
Carry as many blank DVDs and CDs as you can fit in addition to whatever data you carry.
Backup Discipline: Keep a DVD-RW backup of your essential files. Make sure your essential files are clearly marked for this if you have more files than that.
