Veganism

People with this Idea

being vegan is good. good for what?

for you - vegans by default have a zero cholesterol diet, and in general eat less fat, more fresh fruits and vegetables, and more readily absorbable protein. seitan has more grams of protein per ounce than any meat you can find, and is much more easily digested and assimilated into your muscles.

for animals - vegetarians save an average of 96 lives a year. that's a fact. since suffering is not quantifiable, it is impossible to accurately represent the profound impact that vegans have above and beyond vegetarians, to say nothing of omnivores. the conditions that livestock animals are forced to endure are disgusting, horrific, and excrutiatingly painful.

for the earth - rainforests are constantly being bulldozed to provide fresh grazing land for cattle. once the land has been used up, it is no longer arable, and becomes akin to a desert. it takes 50 pounds of grain to produce one pound of hamburger. this means that if everyone in the u.s. stopped eating mcdonald's for one day, we could feed the entire planet for a month with the grain that was saved.

When I was 7 years old I became vegan until I lapsed into mere vegetarianism when when I was 13. I'm a practical survivalist and if I crash with you in the Himalayas and starve, watch your back, and I believe in knowing how to do subsistence hunting and fishing along with foraging and agriculture so that I don't starve in the wilderness. But I don't believe in eating animals except to stay alive in emergencies. I am lucky enough to live in a society where farms produce more than enough cheap vegetarian food for me to survive happily without needless suffering. And some day I'll go vegan again.
