Knotting

Knotting is essential to many survival skills such as [[sheltering]].

Dexterity Factor

Anything that hampers your dexterity like wearing gloves will interfere with knotting.

KNOTS

PRIMARY PURPOSE FOR THE KNOT
1 Clove Hitch Used to start all lashing techniques
2 Tautline Hitch Used when you need to keep a line tight
3 Sheet Bend Used for connecting two ropes
4 Square Knot Used as a final knot in all lashing techniques
5 Prusik Knot Used in gill net construction
6 Eye Knot An effective way of forming a strong loop
7 Bowline A strong knot that will not slip
8 Sheep Shank Used to shorten a rope
9 Constrictor Knot A supremely good knot for seizing bundles of loose material
10 Timber Hitch Good for moving small logs without lifting them

With this skill, you can make firm knots, undo tricky knots, and bind prisoners with ropes.

Most tasks with a rope are relatively simple.

Risk Use Rope Task 50% Tie a firm knot 75%

Tie a special knot, such as one that slips, slides slowly, or loosens with a tug 75%

Tie a rope around oneself one-handed 15

Splice two ropes together (takes 5 minutes)

Binding Someone

When you bind another person with a rope, any Escape Artist test that the bound character makes is opposed by your knotting test. You get a special +10 bonus on the test because it is easier to bind someone than to escape from being tied up. You don’t even make your Use Rope test until someone tries to escape.

Special: A silk rope gives a +10% circumstance bonus on Use Rope tests. If you cast an animate rope spell on a rope, you get a +10% circumstance bonus to any Use Rope tests you make when using the rope. These bonuses stack. If you have 5 or more ranks in Escape Artist, you get a +10% synergy bonus on tests to bind someone.

Skill To Teach

These are the knots that I have learned so far. I will be learning more as the days go by. Please feel free to ask me for assistance:

Butterfly knot: This knot is very useful to climbers and can support the weight of your body, depending on the rope strength.

Bolin knot: This is a simple and very sturdy knot which can be used to hold a rope securely in place

Figure eight knot: This is a sliding knot, which has the ability to get bigger or smaller once tied.

Monkeys Palm: This is a very useful knot which can be used as a weapon. Primarily it is used to heave a line, but let your imagination run  with you. You can put a hard substance in the center.
