I refer to this practice as "metastudy." I spent a some time studying education during my two-year degree; principles of developmental psychology, neurophysiology, and educational environments gave me the tools necessary to pick up almost any subject quickly and comfortably.
In my opinion, autodidactism is one of the most fundamentally important practices that any human being can acquire.
