Newsing is distributing news stories to social news web sites to get more attention.

Submitting News

Cross-post to as many as you think should carry the story. Don't miss the opportunity for [foruming] about important stories posted by yourself and others. Many sites require votes to get stories featured, so newsing is most effective if you put out the word to interested friends to consider supporting your news submissions.

Foruming Social News

You can make an impact on social news not only by submitting stories but also by commenting on the stories that get posted. Actively foruming can counter misinformation and provide context to inadequate or misleading accounts.

f you haven’t already, try to set up your Digg account tonight as well as start ‘befriending’ each other.

Please be aware of the guidelines I established regarding your Digg grade [cut and pasted from the course web site]:

“Digg activity. You’ll need to create a Digg account and become an active member. As a minimum, you’ll need to do the following by lesson 35:

1. Submit at least three stories directly related to a topic from class. To count, articles cannot be ‘dups’.

2. Comment on at least ten articles. To count, a comment must say something intelligent and represent a complete thought.

Digg Grade. If you meet the above two actions, you will get a grade no lower than a C. For this assignment, I will give the highest grades to those with the most Diggs on their submitted stories as well as an evaluation of the quality of your submitted comments. I also encourage each student to ‘digg’ other submitted articles by cadets in Mgt 392—be generous by digging submitted articles from fellow students. On lesson M13, I will provide an initial, 50-point progress grade of your Digg activity. Final Digg activity is due M35. On lessons M13 and M35, please send me an email containing the URL to your Digg profile page.” —Digging Assigned To Econ ClassDigg comments

“Increasingly, commercial news providers are giving their audience more of what they want to hear, rather than what they need to know as citizens. Our best hope for reversing this trend is to help citizens develop an appreciation for quality journalism over populist entertainment,” said Fabrice Florin, founder of NewsTrust... NewsTrust scraps the classic thumbs-up or thumbs-down voting. Instead users vote on a scale of 1-5 whether a story is well sourced, fair and gives appropriate background...Future versions of NewsTrust could check if you’ve been viewing too many partisan opinions or entertainment news. We might encourage you to balance your diet with more factual information, more international coverage, or read more viewpoints that you don’t agree with.”
