I hate to admit it but..
If the American executive branch starts respecting its own constitution, and I don't lose cheap health care, I'm looking forward to a Canada-US union/Merger. Neither of those are priorities for major investors, though.
Other than raising property values, what have been the downsides for the formation of the European Union?
The chief downside is a loss of democratic self-determination
It may add up to profit for some people on their balance sheets, but only if you leave out the substantial unprofitability of having enormous unaccountable governments responsive only to the large corporations that formed them. Government of, by and for the corporations. Huge bureaucracies that make presidential and federal politics seem local by comparison. If we have a corrupt government we can only expect it to get less accountable, and if we have a good one why would we want to jeapordize it? Its a complex issue but that's how I see it.
novus seclorum ordo
So basically, you're concerned about existing problems (corrupt government that answers to its financial backers/lobbyists/corp) becoming worse. Mainly because those with power have the most to gain. (And those without aren't stakeholders.)
But it might also mean I could live and work or party in America, (which has way more people, and more cool stuff going on), without a green card or passport. Or at least I would hope.
I see the idea of a North American Union together with an European Union, as steps towards a world government. Rumour has it people have been working towards that ideal for more than a century. And they will probably continue to work towards it. I think that was the motive behind the United Nations and the League of Nations, too.
If this is an issue for you...
