I try to clean as I go and make no mess. My father always says, "Leave everything better than you found it."

I agree...

Always a good plan. I get a warm and friendly reception whenever I go to my nearest camp site, as me and my buddies are almost the only people who go there that tidy up after themselves.

As a result we are welcome there 365 days per year.

Why leave a poor impression?

Why advertise your presence

Why take the chance of losing kit?

A general 'sweep through' has saved me losing loads of small pieces of camping and survival kit, from boot bands and cutlery to electronics.

It is after all, part of the 'wog' way.

Leave no gear behind

Not losing things is another good reason for doing a clean sweep, good point.

Search training?

I try to leave places tidier than I find them. This is something of particular importance in Dumpster Diving circles. Afterall, if a business routinly has people going through their bins and leaving items strewn around all over the place, they're either going to lock the bins or install a compactor.

By being courtious, it improves your chances for next time.

And as said, doing a sweep before leaving an area reduces your chances of losing something.

There are however seach techniques used by law enforcement agencies. I unfortunatly don't know much about them (other than general concepts of breaking an area up into a grid, and working from ground up).

As a skill that can be applied both professionly and as a day-to-day life skill, this would seem to be a good skill that could also be easily taught via the web.

In the Barcamp SD hacker

In the Barcamp SD hacker challenge where Team Empowerment won third place, we had a hell of a time finding our infrared beacon with our DV camera outside at night. Turns out camera phones picked up the beacon better and we had a huge area around a GPS coordinate to search before a volunteer helped us find it on a door handle of an outbuilding.

We rolled a 1 on our Search check and had to Take 20.

Good Idea!

Interesting.

I also use a tarpaulin to pack and stack my stuff onto, before it goes in my pack. Perhaps, when you go dumpster diving. you could use that to ensure everything you take out, but reject, can be easily put back afterwards.

You can get a good solid blue tarpauling from  hardware stores for about  £2 and the fold up small enough to stow inside a jacket, or courier bag.
