Rugged Laptop

I've had an idea (not just me, but a friend of mine too) to build ourselves a laptop, we came to this idea, when we were hiking in the Austrian Alps. The things we want to enable on this device will be: - Shockproof - Waterproof, or resistant - Solar powered, during the day - Solid-State drives - Modularity - GPS - SatLink and some extra stuff.. At the moment we're still in the research and design sections, but I think we'll be developing some things soon, and I want to build a step-by-step howto to that, so people don't have to buy a Panasonic Toughbook, which is a cool device, but way too expensive for what you get, if you'd ask me. I know some of computer hardware, but the things I don't know and I hope some of the people here can help us with will be: how to build our own solar-collector (and stable power-device to that). something a bit like the rough-rider III (http://ruggednotebooks.com/detail/roughrider3-photos.asp) hope to get something out soon
