RPG Technology
Technology makes everything possible Everything we do today requires technology. A million manufacturers offer an unlimited variety of technological marvels fresh from the corporate research pipeline. Future Technology Much of the advanced technology in Emancy is not actually available in the time an Emancer comes from. Emancers fill their worlds with the futuristic innovations their own science can anticipate and predict but not yet grasp or perfect. Technology may exist in a limited form or be much more expensive, depending on the world. The technology and prices listed here is only a guide and may be modified by the GM at will. Equipping Someone A beginning character generally has enough wealth to start out with some basics. As the character undertakes adventures and amasses loot, she can afford bigger and better gear. At first, however, her options are limited by her budget. Random Starting Money Characters each start with 3d20 x $200 GM Option: Skill Points for More Money Starting characters who want more money can sacrifice skill points for money by choosing the Wealth feature (See Chapter: Features). Technology Descriptions Cost Multiples: Cost multiples stack by adding summed +%s rather than multiplying multiples, so stacking x2 and x3 yields a stacked x4 multiple, not x6. Technology Availability Technology comes in waves and cycles. First, it is usually envisioned as a theoretical possability. Next, it is researched once the building blocks seem to be available. When techniques catch up with the idea, it is prototyped. Then it can be developed into products, which are usually expensive and complex to begin with, possibly requiring intense skilled labor. Only very specialized groups use it, such as the military. As it becomes mass produced and volume increases and techniques improve, costs come down and it spreads wider. When it reaches a certain range of price points it become more available. First, it becomes comercially viable for professionals who need it. Then it becomes available to consumers who want it. Finally, it becomes dirt cheap, something few people are without. Availability Some items are more expensive and difficult to find than others. The availability of an item determines its cost, the difficulty of acquisition and the legalities governing its possession. Available (Normal): The item is fairly easy to acquire and own. Scarce ($x2, Acquire -5): The item is often in short supply and difficult to find without a special supply. Secret ($x10, -10 Acquire): The item’s existance is a secret known by only a few. Those who know of it and can get it are at pains not to use it in a way that will reveal its existance. Research: The item is not mass-produced and exists only in a limited number of research prototypes.
Prototypes only,
Military: The item is off-limits to civilians and is restricted to military use only. Police: Available to law enforcement. Illegal for civilians. Prohibited: Black Market: Acquiring something through the black market is relatively easy. Restricted: Licensed: You need a special license from government authorities to use it. Examples of how licenses work, how they vary by state. Concealable: ? Common: When Ubiquitous: When something becomes ubiquitous, Litter: It is too common and often becomes a waste disposal problem. Regional: Some areas have different restrictions than others. Some regional governments might impose different requirements and regulations on importaters and dealers. Some items are common only in certain regions, eg. AK-47s are common in eastern european countries but rare in the United States. Researching New Technology Sometimes one technology is a stepping stone to another. Sometimes this is foreseen, other times it is accidental or surprising. Requirements for a technology indicate what it takes to make it, and certain techs also improve its availability. For example, firearms required gunpowder but it wasn’t until they were mass produced that they became widely available. The Cost Most techonology is developed with funding. Military technology such as weapons systems often take millions or billions of dollars to develop and even more to mass produce. Miniaturization Making things smaller is a constant goal of technological development. Reducing the weight we have to carry and increasing the battery life expand the usefulness by letting us carry it more often and use it more easily. “People have an almost visceral reaction to what’s NOT there in terms of weight and volume.” —Jonathan Ive Stylization Making things prettier and more distinctive looking is often a way of differentiating products once they become commoditized in terms of capabilities and technology. MONEY & WEALTH
Money makes the world economy go round. It is electronic, liquid energy that flows through the Net and changes hands a million times a minute. World Money The most common currency that people use is the US dollar. Many currencies exist but their values are usually pegged (effectively equal) to the world dollar ($). Dollars can be divided into cents(hundredths of a dollar). Several forms of dollar wealth exist. “Dollars are basically electronic points in a financial game operated b winners, based on nothing more concrete than an agreement between the players to honor it. The stock market is a guessing game within the dollar game (does this sound familiar?), and is considered by some to be the greatest sport on earth.” –Wall@StreetPunk.com. Currencies Different currencies are traded like other commodities on the open market by speculators. The American dollar($) is the world’s strongest currency. As of 5/11/2002, the exchange rates are: Canadian $1.56 Australian $1.84, British Pound: $0.68, € Euro $1.10, Chinese Yuan $8.28, Japanese Yen ¥=$?, Swiss Franc $1.59, Mexican Peso $9.51. See Ideas for explanations of theories about currency trading. Cash Cash dollars are the most liquid form of money. Cash is anonymous, untraceable, and highly transferrable. It can be encoded as a file on the Net or written to a digital wallet for physical storage. Transactions with cash are anonymous, untraceable, and inherantly insecure - your cash can be stolen. Some businesses accept only money orders. Money Orders ($2): Money orders are tests purchased at banks and post offices with cash when they are made, making them instantly cashable at banks by the endorsed recipient without delay. Bank Bank dollars are the currency used by most people. A bank stores your money for you in a private account. It is highly secure in that your banked dollars cannot be electronically stolen (unless the bank itself, an unassailable data fortress, is somehow compromised) or physically taken (no transactions can be made without your authorization). Bank deposits are insured against robberies. Future: It is stored in a bank on the Net and accessed using a number which may be encoded for convenience on a smart card or similar device. Bank dollar transactions are supposed to be private to all but government and law enforcement agencies, but many corporate interests are also privy to the information. Accounts: Different accounts for different people’s money. Debit Cards: Let you pay anyhwhere with a Debit Payment Machine. Limits your maximum daily amounts. Withdrawals: You can use ATM machines to withdraw and deposit money into your account. Currency Exchange: You can get cash currencies converted at rates. Cashing cheques: held by banks. Using cheques is sometimes difficult because people don’t trust them to not bounce. Fees: Banks charge fees for their services that can add up every month. Overdrafts. Money Orders. Account types, etc. Loans: Getting a bank loan requires a proposal be approved by a banker in person. Mortgages: Mortgages are assets for banks. Tax deductibility is a subsidy for rich people disproportionately. Bonds: Long-term low-yield debt from the government. Different terms. Commodities: Options to buy various commodities at standard prices. Currencies: Currency trading is similar to other commodities. Traveller’s Cheques:
Credit Credit dollars are the currency used by most financially suicidal people. A bank extends to you a line of credit from which you can borrow. You can repay your balance and you pay 20% interest per month on it if you don’t pay it all off. It is fairly safe in that your credit balance is secured just as bank dollars are, but hackers can use information left at merchants you buy from to make unauthorized transactions against your balance. Credit use precludes your right to privacy-Banks find out everything about you to ensure their balances can be repaid one way or another, and merchants who transact with you using credit can access this information. Precious Metals Gold and silver are the oldest form of currency but have a limited economic importance today. Gold tends to Stock Stock shares are the currency used by most business people. Stock shares fluctuate in dollar value as the companies they represent equity in generate positive or negative buzz in the world stock market. Most corporations give their employees stock in the company to ensure their loyalty and productivity. Stock shares are purchased at the market price. They can be sold at the new current price, which could be higher or lower than what you originally paid for them. Some stocks have special features, such as paying quarterly cash incentives for ownership called dividends. Stock prices are influenced by the profits of their businesses. For more information on how businesses work, Valuables In Africa, diamonds and other gems were a major source of income for armies and warlords. Collectibles Works of art, comic books, etc., that gain their value by their uniqueness. Real Estate Real estate ownership is one of the oldest forms of income-producing wealth, and it remains very profitable. As populations increase and urban centers swell, land values soar. Real estate can be bought and sold at a value that fluctuates with the area’s supply and demand for housing. Real-estate with housing or office space can also be rented out for monthly income. Tax Evasion Paying taxes.

Hacking needs explanations of how networks work in terms of features. For example, a net with Controlled Access would require a Security test to enter. Intrusion Detection would require a Security test to avoid entrance being detected. Intrusion Countermeasures (Called ‘Ice’) act against intruders. Tests are a combination of “equipment bonuses” of the hosts etc., “skills” of the programs, “mods” of the features. Individual computers/devices are called Locations or Hosts. They can have al the qualities of the Network but are usually defended by it and relatively unprotected themselves. Hacker tactics: on-site supervision with point-to-point communications to avoid giving away locations of team members receiving data streams to tracers or full compromise and tapping. On-site management of all infotech resources including team cyberware, etc., and overwatch on local point communications devices of security. Latency becomes an issue when lives are on the line also. BIOTECHNOLOGY Iodine Tablets These offer quite effective protection from the effects of radiation. The Enemy Who are you training to fight? attacker, rapist, mugger, home invader, or assailant
Pepper Spray $20 In addition to causing an attacker, rapist, mugger, home invader, or assailant pain, pepper spray swells the mucous membranes, which makes breathing , and swells the veins in the eyes, causing the eyes to close. These effects last 20 to 30 minutes and cause no permanent damage. The fourth is pepper spray, which is the oleoresin capsicum extracted from chili peppers. It’s the chemical that gives them their hot quality. OC is a reddish-orange, oily liquid, insoluble in water. This agent is also dispersed by aerosol. The most popular chemical warfare agent for crowd control has been used to gas entire cities. In Seattle, x thousand canisters. In Quebec City, x canisters, etc. It is helpful to know how to treat it. Vinegared Rages: provide an improvised defense against tear gas. Tear Gas First Aid: Your tear gas should come with a package insert that includes first aid instructions. If you accidentally spray yourself with tear gas, you will probably not be able to read these instructions, let alone find them--so read them before you need them. Remove any contact lenses. Copious amounts of water should begin to provide relief and rinse away the tear gas contamination. Warm water may intensify the burning and inflammation, though. Fresh air helps, and washing twice with soap is recommended. Try not to rub! Don’t use a soap that contains a lot of oils, and don’t apply oily lotions--they will trap tear gas particles against your skin and prolong your discomfort.CS, CN and CR tear gasses are usually not very effective against animals. Pain may be reduced by taking an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drug, like ibuprofen. In addition, an over-the-counter antihistamine may alleviate some of the effects of pepper spray. Unfortunately, the time it takes for your body to deliver the drug in a pill to the sites of irritation make them of little use until the effects are already wearing off. They will be most effective if taken before exposure, like the antidotes to some other chemical warfare agents. Infants are very sensitive to tear gas and should be taken to a doctor immediately if exposed to it. Enviromentally Safe, Non-flammable, Oleoresin Capsicum works on animals, is nastiest, needs more direct exposure.
Ultraviolet/Visible Dye for suspect ID.
STRUCTURES We live in a man-made environment. The natural world is smothered under continents of concrete and placed in pots to provide greenery in our skyscrapered cities. Security features, military fortifications, living acommodations, workplace environments, factories, office buildings, shopping malls, airports. Buying Structures Structures have a cost, a number of hours to construct, and a difficulty depending on the complexity and skills required. Mapping Grid The general grid on which spaces are mapped is by square meters. The D20 2 meters is too arbitrary a grid size. 1 meter is more naturally the space occupied by one person and provides a real unit instead of an imaginary “space”. Landscaping Bushes: Trees: Greenery is pleasant to look at. Planting seedlings from nurseries. +Beauty. Fountains: Beautifying and artistic. Lawn: Requires constant weeding and mowing care. Rough terrain. Damaged by wheeled vehicles. Roads Roads let vehicles travel smoothly at their top speeds. Rougher terrain slows them down and make for bumpy rides. Most roads are maintained by governments and paid for by taxes. Privatization is a new phenomenon. Dirt Road ($1000/km DC16 20h): Bumpy but serviceable route for remote locales. Street: Single lane of smooth asphalt provides a smooth ride for cars. Multiple lanes often placed side by side. Street Island: Curbed divider between street lanes filled with asphalt, gravel, grass, trees, etc. Street Signs: Provide various instructions like Stop, Yield, etc. Sidewalk: Protects walkers from cars with a steep curb. Lamppost: Illuminates 10m radius area below. 0.25m3.
Mailbox: A household mailbox on a post with a notification flag. Mail Delivery Box: A large box for dropping stamped mail for delivery. 1m3. Newsbox: A box for distributing a newspaper. Usually free or $0.25.
Pier: Wooden deck platform on stilts. Bridge: Suspension Bridge: Good for long distances. Floating Bridge: Good for untrafficked waters.
Emancy Downtown Office: 1 Stone Archway (2x10), 2 Restrooms (5x10), Room (10x10), Bookstore (30x30) with counter, L . Actually, isn’t it better to have no permanent facility and to rely on renting other people’s spaces? Why have a kitchen in an expensive area when restaurants abound? The primary purpose of the space then is as a meeting place. It can just as easily have an adopted home like the Coffee Cat magic card scene in Santa Barbara, an unofficial meeting place like the 2600 monthly meet. But if running a fancy official office seemed important for housing full-time staff and housing meetings and the like and money was not nonexistant, it would be very cool to have such a nifty office. It would be good to perfect the idea of a permanent and stable org with virtual offices on the net. The purpose of offices is to let people who are offline connect and holding real world meetings with people who aren’t interested in using the net stuff. Its an issue of public access and equality, otherwise the net stuff becomes like the latin of the church, a language barrier to cement their power.

Buildings These descriptions are typical configurations of such buildings’ component parts. Exactly how they are put together into a floorplan varies. Large Office Building: Huge Office Building: Relative sizes... buildings are Huge relative to human Medium in size, so a Small structure is a cottage and a medium one is a house and a large one is an apartment building and a huge one is an office building. Chainlink Fence ($500 + $50 per meter in length, DC 10, 2 hours) Simple but effective barriers, 4 meters high.
Electric Fence ($5000 + $500 per meter in length, Construction DC 14, 2 hours) Touching an electric fence inflicts 1d20 stun damage. The victim must make a Fortitude Save test (DC 10) to remove her paralyzed hands from the fence. Failure means that the victim remains touching the fence and suffers damage again. If knocked unconscious, the victim suffers damage one final time before falling out of contact with the fence. Normal fences are 4 meters high but can be doubled in height for double cost. Fence sections are HP 40 DR 5 against bludgeoning or cutting damage and immune to piercing damage which just passes through to the other side. Explosives might be able to tear wholes in the fence if they detonate at its base. Digging under is usually made difficult by buring the fence two meters in the ground. Most fences have warning signs which may be required by law, but some don’t.
Construction Components Running Water Plumbing: Earthquake Resistance:
Barbed Wire ($50 per meter in length): Fixed atop a fence or wall, this injures anyone attempting to climb over. Barbed wire can be circumvented by first draping it with thick material of at least Stun Resistance 1.
