Muslims believe that God revealed the Qur'an to Muhammad, God's final prophet, and regard the Qur'an and the Sunnah (words and deeds of Muhammad) as the fundamental sources of Islam.[5] They do not regard Muhammad as the founder of a new religion, but as the restorer of the original monotheistic faith of Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and other prophets. Islamic tradition holds that Jews and Christians distorted the revelations God gave to these prophets by either altering the text, introducing a false interpretation, or both.

A general feeling for Islamic practices and duties can be found in the Five Pillars of Islam:
- Shahadah- a statement that is a summary of Islam that is often repeated in prayer: "I testify that there is none worthy of worship except God and I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of God."
- Salah- a ritual of prayer, performed five times daily in various prostrate positions.
- Zakat-alms giving, donating a portion of one's annual income to the poor.
- Sawm- fasting during the daylight hours of the holy month of Ramadan.
- Hajj- a pilgrimage to Mecca.
