i've been straight edge since forever.  i like being in control of myself, my surroundings, and my situation. plus, when you live your life like i do, there's no reason to "augment" it with "recreational" substances. opiates are the opiate of the masses.

A lot of questions about it...

I agree with most of what you said, but here's some of my questions that you don't have to answer but I was interested in:

1. I like being in control of myself, surroundings, situation too and that knowledge comes from having done drugs in the past. How can you know/feel that using drugs and alcohol is always bad if you've never experienced that feeling? Is it based soley off a principle you have abouf fully living healthfully, or did you also become sX because of seeing people you know use too much?

2. Many people I know who were sX started drinking and/or using when they became of age, or when they had some changing point in their life. Psychologically, if you place drugs and alcohol as a taboo, it seems like one would be more likely to be drawn towards them. That's one of the reasons I am not a sX, because I think that if I don't spend much time thinking about it, I won't be attracted towards using. I like breaking rules, and so if I create one for myself about not allowing any substances in my life, I am probably more likely to use them than if I do what I do now, which is no restriction, but almost never use. What do you think?

3.  What do you think about sX about a "scene", a genre, and an aesthetic? Do you think it limits the types of people who get involved in it, or that it attracts more young people because of the aesthetic of punk-y kids with black and studs? I also don't know much about the origions of sX music but find it a little odd to sing about not doing things, instead of things that are actually present in your life.

sXe crew as social movement?

If you see this, your ass is probably already beaten for some undefined reason.

Point Missed

I certainly wouldn't imply that there was a lack of self discipline and motivation in the Strait Edge movement.  This image is, I'm sure, funniest to people who aren't strait edge and really like stereotypes.

props for the unibrow

but what about the non-angry strait edgers?

I think that it's not a

I think that it's not a statement about self-discipline or control. It's a statement that straight edge is something that often appeals to kids under 21, and once they're allowed to drink alcohol, they realize it's not socially a big deal, and so they just drink with moderation, or just not at all. I think that abstaining from drinking can be great and I have nothing against that on principle- it's just that  straight edge seems to me to just be a scene, an aesthetic, and not much more meaningful than that.

Sure!

And all i'm saying is that the hardcore strait edge scene, nationally, has bred violent crews of individuals that seem to enjoy ganging up and beating the holy snot out of people.  It's not the rule, of course, but it's a phenomina.

In CA, the straightedge

In CA, the straightedge scene seems like a lot of young guys who wear lots of black and studs, and listen to/play metal, hardcore and/or punk. I don't ever see violent straight edgers, but some of them are kinda intimidating, yes.
