School : A kids view (for once)

Realistically a kid will not usually see School as an enjoyable experience, some consider it a daily task or chore, while others consider it an everyday personal hell, with varying degrees above, below, and between. I myself consider it a daily ritual with a long forgotten purpose. the purpose of school was to EDUCATE nowadays the purpose of school has been warped to being nothing more than a meeningless series of tests to "earn" "CREDENTIALS"  or more commonly know items such as High school diplomas, wich are required for just about every decent job on the planet... or at least in the US. i dont live in any other country so i cant comment on such matters. but in my mind this system is wrong, instead of giving children preset courses that have no personal attraction with the child it should be teaching the child what the child wishes to learn. take the book The Diamond Age or, A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer one of the many key plot devices in the book the "primer" was a book, moreover an elaborate nano circuitry supercomputer that told an educational story designed to match the readers personality, through a long course of interaction with eachother. I beleive the Ideal Education System would simply teach a child what he or she wants to know, for example, say the kid wants to learn about rockets, well good tell him about rockets, then tell him about the chemistry involved with the rocket, then when he asks what chemestry is teach him about it, and so on and so forth, its as simple as that, just tell the what he wants to know

On any other web site, such an idea would sound impoossible

But I believe we are undertaking the process of making the Primer a reality. I think you have a point about teaching things in terms of their relavence to things we are actually interested in. I think you could trick someone into learning MORE than they teach in high school by showing how all the subject areas relate to things they care about, but they teach it backwards teaching you subjects without giving you a reason to care first. One must take advantage of the present educational opportunities as best as one can by using one's awareness of higher aspirations to motivate yourself in the ways that they do not motivate for you. School is full of useful learning, but you have to convince yourself to take advantage of them because they do such a poor job of it. Good post... I can talk all day about what I think education should be but we can actually start testing things with you and your friends and see what really works and what doesn't.

My favorite class was English

You learn SO MUCH about how to communicate in English classes... That's the most valuable thing in all of high school. Pay sharp attention to what they teach, it gets much better in the next few years and you will gain tools to help you in your brilliant creative writing you're already doing to take it to the next level.

agreement on english class

I do have to agrre with alex that you do learn how to communicate in english classes but overall i think school is a ridiculous waste of time. the thing with me is i like having knowledge... i dont like being in the dark about things and school gives me some, while limited some, resources to at least get a jumpstart on things and i can find other people my age to talk about it with(sasha u bryce etc.) but yeah generally a waste of time i couls use freeing animals or over-throwing Bush or something.
