slax live linux
Slax is empowering for a number of reasons. Slax, is not by any means the only live distro out there, but it is powerful and easy. There are a few different basic ready to burn isos of different versions--a general, a server edition, and a lightweight command line version. But then the beauty comes in the form of modules for hundreds of different software packages, ready to be plugged into the iso before you burn it. There are automated tools for rebuilding/burning isos as well as building packages. The powerful variations that can be concocted cover such a vast range of usefulness, that I'll scarcely be able to it justice here. Suffice it to say, you'll be able to quickly and easily (and freely) be able to develop live distributions for just about any configuration you might want to run off of cd, dvd, or usb device. It'll really surprise you how useful you might find it to have an operating system in your pocket.
Some configuration ideas.....

-portable office
-portable development environment
-windows troubleshooting
-forensics
-disposable server discs
-spread the free/open source memes
-test box--immune to permanent damage ('cause you simply reboot)
