Mac Fix: Quicktime 7.2 Stalls Apps

Tags:

My Mac is sick. I'm a true believer in Apple and a proud MacBook Pro user, but that's no reason why a DOSPEC failure shouldn't be documented. As an former professional Mac technician, I'm not really worried and solving this problem is more an interesting puzzle than a disaster, so here's the full details.

I've been having problems launching some applications for a few weeks now. It got the the point where I couldn't use Stuffit Expander on downloads and I couldn't use my MidiKeys software keyboard to make music. This meant war.

I found some articles explaining the situation:

Apple: Mac OS X: Some applications may not open after QuickTime 7.2 Update

The problem boils down to a messed up prebinding phase in the QT 7.2 installer and the solution boils down to going to Terminal and typing:

sudo update_prebinding -root / -force

I'm going to follow the instructions though: download the 10.4.10 combo updater, reboot with SHIFT held down for safe mode, install, reboot. That should take care of it. Here goes nothing!
