Podcasting delivers audio and video shows to Internet subscribers for listening and watching on computer and iPod.

Why Podcasting Is King

  • It beats TV, radio & print by combining electronic freedom with the ultimate in convenience
  • TV and radio are seductive because they require little effort to watch. But podcasting beats TV.
  • Effort required: Click Subscribe. Enjoy new content in your media library every day via iTunes.
  • It comes straight to you in any format or mixture of formats. You can podcast PDF documents, MP3 audio, MPG4 video, all on a 24-hour as-it-happens basis.
  • It can be enhanced to take maximum advantage of bittorrent, saving tremendous bandwidth costs.
  • It syncs with any portable devices you have such as an iPod or Powerbook or PC.
  • Videos can also be distributed by other channels such as YouTube and Google Video.

Creating A Podcast

  • Creating podcasts is easy.

Syndication On Radio Networks

  • Syndicating your podcast on radio and streaming stations is a good way to reach new listeners not familiar with your podcast.

  • Radio networks may require consistent show lengths to fit into their show schedule's time slots.
  • Podcasts can vary in length, but for radio compatability, you may wish to restrict your show lengths or offer an "aftershow show" seperately or roll content over for the next day's show.

iTunes Friendlyness

  • iTunes is the most popular podcasting app and the iPod is the most popular podcasting device.
  • Making a podcast work optimally on iTunes requires some additional XML formatting.
  • Podcasting is not Apple specific and podcast does not equal iPod. Podcasters can list themselves on a variety of directories other than iTunes, and listeners can use a variety of RSS clients to download to a variety of mobile devices.

Examples of Incorrect Podcasting

Newsreal is a good example of an excellent podcast with a confused and flawed podcasting setup that hampered the listenership. Why does this matter? If NewsReal was better packaged and distributed, it might have a much wider audience and attract more donors which could lead the host to work on projects full time.

Sampling

Creative use of sampling techniques can make your podcasts more entertaining.
