Sleep System

A sleep system is a complete setup for staying warm and getting a good night's rest instead of freezing and taking The Big Sleep.

Sleeping Bag

The most essential component to keep warm. A sleeping bag alone can suffice indoors with heating and soft carpet or couches.

Sleeping Pad

An essential layer of insulation when sleeping on cold or hard ground.

Bivy Sack

A minimalist shelver against the elements.

Ground Sheet

A clean surface on which to lay your sleeping pad and the rest of your kit.

Pillow

Without a pillow, you can easily hurt your neck.

Shelter

A shelter protects your sleeping system and allows you to stay dry in inclement weather.

Sleep Discipline

There is more to a sleep system than equipment. Getting enough sleep and waking up is a struggle for some people with habitual sleep deprivation habits. You need at least 6-8 hours of sleep to wake up on time the next day.

Habitual Lateness

If you have trouble getting to sleep, print out the Sleep System Infocard and read it to remind yourself of the pain of habitual lateness and the importance of sleep discipline in maintaining your consistency and integrity.

Morning Routine

Aim to be wherever you need to be 30 minutes early so that you can afford to prepare unhurried and leave on time or get there early and do something fun like reading or computing for 30 minutes on arrival.

Compare Two Campers

Compare two campers in the mountains of Catalonia. The camper on the left has a complete sleeping system: sheet, pad, bivy, bag, warmth. The camper on the right is probably cold, and definitely an eyesore.
