Stickering is the practice of printing messages on sticker paper and attaching them directly to things and places people will see them.

Public Stickering Is Illegal

Stickering public places and other people's private property is generally illegal and may get you arrested for vandalism.

"Posters and the people who are putting posters up are too vulnerable because they are slow. They could be arrested and a quantity of posters could be taken from them. And you can't expect from ordinary people to get dirty putting up the posters with glue and risking arrest. But you can count on everyone when it comes to a putting up a sticker."

Removable Stickers

For an inoffensive approach to stickering that leaves no mess behind for underpaid employees to clean up, use removable stickers.

Stickering Opportunities

Advertisements in public areas such as universities and public transit provide you with large, visible, eye catching surfaces onto which you can apply your message.

Lighters are something to put stickers on because everyone asks to see them.

Disruptive Stickering

There are even more direct methods of ensuring your message comes across. People can easily cast away Idea Cards despite their ideal wallet size, but what if the message is in their way? Applying a sticker across the barcode of a product is a gauranteed method of making sure at least one person finds your message. This effect can be increased exponentially if a group of people were to infect an entire store, creating a kind of epidemic of ideas. Every time a product needs to be scanned, the message must be removed- this involves the employee, as well as the customer, possibly even the management. Note- Do not be sloppy with this method, else you could easily be caught and even arrested for vandalism. Do not sticker an establishment more than once as a group.

Alternative Media

  • Carding: Distributing idea cards is less vandalistic and easier for finders to keep in their pockets.

Downhill Battle

OTPOR (Defeated Slobodan Milosovic)

"We knew that there...there will be the dozens of policemen everywhere waiting to see the first box and to take it and to arrest whoever. Because their problem was that - in the last days of the campaign they became very nervous. Because the key medium of the campaign was the sticker. We counted on ten, up to twenty thousand people. Posters and the people who are putting posters up are too vulnerable because they are slow. They could be arrested and a quantity of posters could be taken from them. And you can't expect from ordinary people to get dirty putting up the posters with glue and risking arrest. But you can count on everyone when it comes to a [putting up a] sticker. They were so pissed off, because we printed 62 tons of material, out of which stickers were the biggest part - 1.8 million was the total amount of "He's Finished" stickers. That... they decided to find and to take everything. So we knew that they will be there and we filled 9 empty boxes with air. And we say this is the load-in and people were carrying boxes like it is something hard, like it has really stickers or material inside.... in front of hundreds of people and journalists. Because we announced it in the papers and people came to see what will happen. And of course the police looked ridiculous - stopping those people and taking boxes from them and recognizing the fact that they were empty."

You Are Beautiful Stickers

"I have a large collection now, and engage in it gleefully! I print up the stickers myself, put clear laminate on them so they are weather proof. I also use stickers that don't hurt or leave residue on the surface they are stuck on, so they can be easily removed and nobody can claim property was damaged. It is so much fun!"
