My Blog
Sleeping in hour-and-a-half bursts
blog posted by chris Mon, 2007-09-10 00:44It works, I swear to Bog!
No longer need you be away from the land of the conscious for more than 90 minutes at a time! No longer need you fear the 'little death'... or sleep for that matter! The head of the world can be yours, on a 19-and-a-half-waking-hours-a-day platter!
Experimenting on his own feeble flesh, this writer has lived the polyphasic dream! Rode the lightning of insomnia! Has not feared the reaper of free time! Has exited the Sandman! Has superciliously shorn the shackles of sleepy slavery!
So, remember 3 dreams a night! Amaze your friends, confuse your relatives! Fuck with your body clock like it ain't bin fuckt wit be-fo!
My particular hours of choice are 2200-2330, 0130 to 0300, 0400-0530. I struggled with this for a while, but it eventually worked while having one of those ineffective hypnosis tapes on repeat, repeatedly telling me how relaxed I was, I don't know if that had anything to do with it.
Anyway, just wanted to share that.
Or kill me.

Trancendentalism
I've only recently gotten into this. While I am in strong agreement with its ideals, the philosophy of transcendentalism seems a little immature, going back to Enlightenment rationalism, based on the triumph of science and reason, and conveniently ignoring a hundred years or so of German romanticist thought, as well as the realities of technology's interaction with humanity in the 20th century. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I have to think that such a philosophy could only exist in a culture that hasn't had a major war for a long time.
That said, if transcendentalism were to work, it would be a very good thing.
Nihilism
I've been a nihilist for a while. I suppose my philosophy is kind of a mix of existential nihilism and Kantian philosophy, although I reject most of Kant's moral philosophy, specifically the categorical imperative and the a priori sense of the good.
However, reading Kant gave me the impression that reality can only be considered as the experience of a mind. Of course, this is a silly and illogical statement , as the mind is part of reality. But, the mind is the only thing capable of having the concept of 'thing', taking a glass as example, there is no objectively real separation between the realm of glass and air at the edge of the glass, yet we define the glass to be part of the glass, and ignore the air. This kind of arbitrary labelling can be applied to absolutely every'thing' we would consider to exist, down to the smallest subatomic particle (the one we don't know about yet), and we can even define half of that!
What it comes down to, then, is that we are never able to understand the fundamental nature of reality from what our brain makes of it, as the purpose of our perceptions are to let us catch things and prolong our existence. i.e. No 'thing' objectively exists, and the subjective existence of any 'thing' is entirely dependent on personal interpretation. There is no inherent value in this interpretation. Objective reality itself, were it to actually exist, is so, by definition, meaningless, out of our scope, and full of holes, that it's not really worth thinking about.
Anarchism
This is more of a personal preference than anything, I've always been antagonistic towards all authority. Anarchism would probably stop a lot of genocide, and stop people from being screwed over en masse by religion.

Skills
I'm so unreliable that I don't really like to put anything here, in case I only think I can do whatever.
But still, want anything done, talk to me, and I might do it. Anything vaguely computer-related, especially, I think I know a fucketload of programming languages, and can learn what I don’t know quickly.
Also I'm quite good with (the English) language, if a bit dry.
Timing
At the moment I am:
- Learning a bit about Russian history via audiobook
- Trying to improve my Latin
- Working 40 hrs a week as a low level programmer/high level stats monkey for a moderately crappy call centre
- Doing some Drupal development
- Doing whatever else comes to mind
