Wireless networking is insecure. WEP Encryption and MAC Address Filtering are both defeatable in about 10 minutes. They function only as a deterrant.

Dual Cards
You can use bult-in Airport Extreme for scanning while... Prism2 based USB dongle for passive scanning (and packet re-injection), then use the AirPort extreme for connectivity. This way scanning can continue whilst I happily use the network of my choosing. Where-as, where I to only utilise the Airport Extreme card, once I found a network I wanted to hop onto, I'd have to stop scanning, and couldn't start scanning again until I had finished using the network... which isn't very convenient.
